Eating Amsterdam, on a budget.
In this city, it can be a struggle to find cheaper eats worth your time. So let me tell you where to look...
The other day, I went to a reputable sandwich joint and ordered two sandwiches and two soft drinks. I was charged THIRTY-FOUR EUROS.
Usually, I’ll defend the high price of food. I once was a food producer after all. I understand that making quality food by hand is expensive. Baristas, bakers and sandwich-makers deserve to be well paid. They put the art in artisanal (gonna trademark that, thanks). I also understand that we’ve been through a cozzie livs (translation: cost of living crisis) and that nothing is cheap. So I won’t single out this sandwich shop – this isn’t a story about greed.
All that said, thirty-four euros for two sarnies and two soft drinks is still a LOT.
I’m not alone in my shock. Whenever I post a Reel about lunchy food in Amsterdam, I receive a comment along the lines of: €12 for that?? What’s happened to Amsterdam?? I never respond but usually someone else will, saying: It’s just an expensive city.
