For Winkel 43, the trick is to go super late. They are actually open until 1 a.m., and I've had many cheeky gin-and-tonics accompanied by slices of apple pie after midnight. No queuing required :)
Totally agree. Dinner at Hinata and then a wee slice of apple pie after is the perfect evening - I dream about it. Would move back to Amsterdam purely for nights like these 😂
Great article, thanks for your research and opinions! I've only been to Van Stapele and agree — if no line, sure it's a good cookie, but if there's a line out the door, not worth it.
I'm so glad that I live here and not only feel the hilarity from your humour, but also from having shared experiences. Your writing feels like a story I want to read all the time. Thanks for continuously sharing your thoughts, and making me laugh out loud!
I stood in the queue for Fabel Friet; I used to live in the neighborhood when it was called Penguin Snackbar, run by funny and friendly Egyptians, but since I moved to the quiet Rivierenbuurt I never went there again, until some time ago. Walking back to my tram stop, I decided to do the walk I had done so many times, through Runstraat and Huidenstraat.
There I saw my first queue.
I saw people eating fries on the street like they were made of gold. Of course, I had heard about the queues but had never seen one, but this was my first.
The next week, I took a friend. We waited for about fifteen minutes and then had our Fries, which were much better than I expected.
I haven't tried the other things you are talking about yet, apart from Winkel43. I passed by there the other day and was shocked to see a queue there. It was an evening in the middle of the week, and people were waiting outside in the cold for their verukkelijke appeltaart.
Yes, very often, in the past, I had been waiting there too, but it was always on Monday morning when there was the Lapjesmarkt, the Monday morning market. For the rest of the week, Winkel was just a regular place.
I am not too fond of those queues. Not at all, and in a way, I was sad to see the Winkelqueue. Their 'appeltaart'is delicious, but those queues?
Some funny trivia for you. These places blew up after they went viral TikTok, probably during the Covid era when all there was to do was walk round the canals and sample some snacks. In response, some very punny (sorry) Dutch speaker amended the names AND street signs of several of the stores as follows...
Runstraat (home of Fabel Friet) --> Rijstraat, where "Rij" in Dutch translates to queue
Berenstraat (home of Chun) --> Schapenstraat, where "Schapen" means sheep; because beren are bears ;)
Such a hilarious read!!

Oh I love that! Late night pie, the best kind <3

I used to live around the corner from Winkel and this was our trick! We also liked going first thing for breakfast after a night out.

Excellent excellent reporting!
